    Ruth Muller just celebrated her 105th birthday.  This likely makes her the oldest person in the City of Calais, possibly even in the state.  

    Born in Germany on January 3, 1915, Ms. Muller immigrated to the United States with her parents and two sisters through Ellis Island.  Like others at that time, her parents were in search of a better life for her family.  Ms. Muller was eight years old and did not speak a word of English.

    Avian Haven (avianhaven.org), located in Freedom, Maine, is a rehabilitation center dedicated to the return of injured and orphaned wild birds to their natural roles in the wild.  Last week, the center admitted two bald eagles from two separate areas, each experiencing symptoms due to lead poisoning.  Unfortunately, one of the birds did not survive.

  11. COIG, Celtic Group Donates to Food Pantry

    Calais Celtic Concerts, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus #149, collected $375 for the Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry at its Dec. 21st Celtic Christmas show at Calais High School that featured Coig from Cape Breton, N.S.  At each of their stops, Coig donated food and money for food pantries and fuel assistance programs. At their Farmington concert, the fuel collection qualified for a $5,000 matching grant.

  12. Princeton Gains New Animal Control Officer

    On December 11th, the Town of Princeton made a public announcement on its Facebook page. The town needed an animal control officer immediately. While the search was going on, it was asked that any Princeton resident who was having an issue with a dog or cat call the town office.

    Shortly after, on December 17th, Stephen Seavey was voted Princeton’s new animal control officer.

  13. First Responders, Road Crews Kept Busy with Friday’s Precipitation

    Much of the state saw mixed precipitation last Friday, which consisted of rain, snow, and sleet, along with temperatures hovering around freezing.  Road conditions were extra slippery, with numerous motor vehicle accidents reported.

    In Calais, around 11 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle accident on River Road.

  14. CHS National Honor Society Food Drive

    Over the first two weeks of December the Calais High School National Honor Society held a food drive at the school. The group collected over 900 nonperishable food items for the Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry.     Barbara’s International School of Dance recently held the Christmas Benefit Show at Calais High School.   37. Calais Local, Wayne Sowers, Places at Weight Lifting World Championships

    Washington County’s very own Wayne Sowers has just competed in the Weight Lifting World Championships in Las Vagas, Nevada.

    This five-day event went on from November 12th through the 17th.

    Sowers won three medals from the NABDL, National Association of Benchers and Deadlifters. He received a third-place medal in the bench press, a fourth place in the push-pull, and a fifth in the deadlift.

    Mr. Brian Giles has a few different roles at Indian Township School.  Not only does he teach special education, but he is also the food corps supervisor and a member of the orchard and garden planning committee.  Giles’ goal is to have a self-sustaining cafeteria at Indian Township School and to provide food for the local community.  He has received support from the school board and administration, tribal council and Chief, and local businesses.

  42. Pratt Donation Campaign Brings in $16,000 for Washington County Food Pantries

    For the past several years, after realizing how great the need is for the food pantries in Washington County and in an effort to decrease food insecurity locally, businessman Ian Pratt has matched donations to local food pantries.  Anyone taking part in his matching donation campaign could simply bring his or her donation to the Pratt car dealership throughout the month of November, where all donations would be matched, up to $3,000.  This year, however, Pratt was able to increase his match to $5,000.
