  7. Calais Regional Medical Services Welcomes James Eshleman, D.O.

     

    Calais Regional Medical Services is pleased to announce that Dr. James Eshleman has joined the Family Medicine office.   He will be seeing patients at the CRMS practice on a part-time basis 2-3 days per week.   Dr. Eshleman spent over four decades at his family practice office in Norway, Maine.  Following retirement he was able to spend more time at his vacation camp in West Grand Lake.   However, after three weeks he decided full retirement was not for him and reached out to Calais Regional Hospital to offer his services.

  9. Pink Game At Calais High School

     

    The Calais Lady Blue Devils hosted the eighth annual Pink Zone game against the Woodland Lady Dragons on Wednesday, January 22, sponsored by Calais Regional Hospital to raise awareness about breast cancer. For this one evening, fans were asked to drop their team colors and unite together by wearing pink to the game. As in years past, the Pink Zone had additional Supporters: PCT Communications and V.L. Tammaro Oil Co. Breast Cancer Awareness information and promotional items were available at the game.

  10. Knights of Columbus Earn Fifth Place in Annual Tootsie Roll Drive

    Every year members of the Knights of Columbus Council #149 join together for the annual Tootsie Roll Drive. 

    Volunteers stand out in front of local businesses and other busy spots around town and offer Tootsie Rolls in exchange for donations. The donations go to people in Maine who live with mental or physical disabilities.

    At a special dinner ceremony at the St. Croix Knights of Columbus Hall on Sunday night, Calais Celtic Concert Director Tom MacDonald presented a check for $1,000 to the officers of the council for their High School Scholarship Fund. Each year the Knights of Columbus give out high school scholarships to both Woodland and Calais High Schools. For the past few years the scholarships have been funded by the Calais Celtic Concert Series.   12. Historic Stained-Glass Windows to be Removed from Closed Pleasant Point Church

    The 19 historic stained-glass windows at Pleasant Point’s St. Ann Church will be removed and placed in storage, according to a press release from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.  The windows depict saints, along with Native American symbols and figures on some.

    An agreement for the removal and preservation of the windows was signed by Bishop Robert P. Deeley, of the Maine diocese, and tribal Chief Marla Dana.

    Calais Parks and Recreation Director Craig Morrison made the annual presentation of the Michael McPherson Award last Saturday.  The award, Morrison told those in attendance, began in 2000 and recognizes a community member who is a vital volunteer at the Calais Recreation Department.

  14. Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship

    The St. Croix Knights of Columbus Council #149 held its Free Throw Championship last Saturday.  This annual event is open to area boys and girls ages 9 to 14, and winners in each division now move on to the state championship.  

    All ten winners were named Council Champions of the 2020 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and have earned the right to compete at the state level. The St. Croix Council #149 in Calais sponsored the local competition at Calais Elementary School. All kids age 9 to 14 were eligible to participate.

  22. World’s Largest Jetliner Diverted to Bangor

    On Monday, Jan. 13, the largest passenger plane in the world made an unscheduled stop at Bangor International Airport.  Officials said a medical emergency involving a passenger resulted in the landing.  

    The fire department used its aerial ladder to retrieve the passenger from the second level of the double-decker A380.

    Washington County Commissioner Chris Gardner opened a public hearing last week explaining what the hearing was — and was not — for.

    “I understand the large number of people in this room tonight is because there are some strong feelings on this subject. I want to make it clear that the commissioners are not the committee of jurisdiction for approving or disapproving this project,” said Gardner. “It’s approved or disapproved by the DEP and the LUPC.”

    Brig. Gen. Dean Preston was promoted from colonel to his current rank Jan. 5 in a 1 p.m. ceremony at the 240th Regional Training Institute in front of an audience of family, friends and National Guard members.

    In his new role as land component commander, Preston will be responsible for all training, manning and equipping of Maine Army National Guard forces and ensuring operational readiness requirements are properly met.

    For some, birthdays are just another cake and the addition of another candle on top. But for lifelong Calais resident Verna MacKechnie, this year marks a total of 103 candles on top of her cake.

    Verna was born in Calais area on January 9, 1917, and has made Calais her home ever since. In addition to raising a family, Verna held a number of jobs over the years and was always known for her hard work and got get ‘em work ethic.

    Down East Community Hospital welcomes its first baby of 2020!  Alison Furman, of Princeton, gave birth to Chase Alexander Furman at 9:14 a.m. on January 3.  Chase, who is cuddly and very sweet, weighed in at 6 pounds and 13 ounces.

    Alison was happy to be presented with the New Year’s baby basket that overflowed with gifts from Down East Community Hospital and area businesses.

    The ice skating rink in Woodland is open for those who want to skate at their own risk.

    “Kids have been skating there. The big thing is ice and weather conditions permitting. With the weather fluctuating the way it is, it’s basically a day-to-day basis,” said Michael Boies, Parks and Recreation Director for the town of Baileyville. “Because it’s an outdoor rink, we’re at the mercy of the weather.”

    Ruth Muller just celebrated her 105th birthday.  This likely makes her the oldest person in the City of Calais, possibly even in the state.  

    Born in Germany on January 3, 1915, Ms. Muller immigrated to the United States with her parents and two sisters through Ellis Island.  Like others at that time, her parents were in search of a better life for her family.  Ms. Muller was eight years old and did not speak a word of English.

    Avian Haven (avianhaven.org), located in Freedom, Maine, is a rehabilitation center dedicated to the return of injured and orphaned wild birds to their natural roles in the wild.  Last week, the center admitted two bald eagles from two separate areas, each experiencing symptoms due to lead poisoning.  Unfortunately, one of the birds did not survive.

  43. COIG, Celtic Group Donates to Food Pantry

    Calais Celtic Concerts, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus #149, collected $375 for the Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry at its Dec. 21st Celtic Christmas show at Calais High School that featured Coig from Cape Breton, N.S.  At each of their stops, Coig donated food and money for food pantries and fuel assistance programs. At their Farmington concert, the fuel collection qualified for a $5,000 matching grant.

  44. Princeton Gains New Animal Control Officer

    On December 11th, the Town of Princeton made a public announcement on its Facebook page. The town needed an animal control officer immediately. While the search was going on, it was asked that any Princeton resident who was having an issue with a dog or cat call the town office.

  45. First Responders, Road Crews Kept Busy with Friday’s Precipitation

    Much of the state saw mixed precipitation last Friday, which consisted of rain, snow, and sleet, along with temperatures hovering around freezing.  Road conditions were extra slippery, with numerous motor vehicle accidents reported.

    In Calais, around 11 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle accident on River Road.
