D & G Automotive on Main Street in Calais has a new name.  Now Papa’s Auto Service, LLC, the business has been purchased and taken over by Bill Lee and his wife Jeannie. The two and their new team of mechanics will be offering auto detailing, rocker repair, cab corners, manifold replacement, vehicle pick up and drop off, and more.

On Wednesday, March 18, it was announced that the longest border between two countries--the US/Canadian border--would close for non-essential travel.  President Trump assured citizens that trade would not be affected.  

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explained that travelers would not be permitted to cross the border for recreation and tourism, and also stressed, however, that “essential travel” would not stop.

Back in December, The Calais Advertiser reported on a locally filmed Christmas movie--”The Christmas Doodle,” a Wright Family Film--that had recently been released and was available for purchase.  

Now, CEO of the film company David Wright has learned that he is one of eight from around the world who has been nominated as Actor of the Year in a Worldwide Christian Film at the International Christian Film Festival.

As coronavirus (COVID-19) becomes more of a concern in our State, Calais Regional Hospital will institute visitor restrictions and illness screenings for those entering the facility as of March 18.  An alternate entrance for suspect coronavirus patients has also been established.  These proactive precautions are to protect our patients, staff and the communities we serve.  

Temporary changes to our Visitors Policy are being implemented.  Restrictions include:

• Visitors must be 12 years or older

Evan Merchant of Beals, Maine is this year’s Washington County recipient of the Legislature’s $1,000 Memorial Scholarship. Evan majors in captive wildlife care and education at Unity College.

James (Jack) Braley Jr. joined Calais Regional Hospital in February as Director of Radiology.  James recently relocated from Florida, however, this is his second return to his roots, having been born in Calais and raised in Baileyville. He was also the acting Director of Radiology for CRH in 2000-2001. He brings his previous CRH experience to include 35 years as a Registered Technical Radiographer with 27 years of that in Radiology Management.   

The Furry Friends Food Bank has been adopted by a University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H club in Washington County. Cobscook Currents 4-H club members, committed to making a positive difference in their community, chose the food bank for pets as a community service project. 

 Club members have installed a pet food collection box for public donations at the Whiting General Store, 136 U.S. Route 1, Whiting. Furry Friends Food Bank is an Eastern Area Agency on Aging program designed to help seniors feed and support their four-legged companions.

Calais Police Department recently welcomed a new addition to its force.  Officer James Barnard, a 2001 Calais High School graduate, came on board in January.

Prior to working for Calais Police Department, Officer Barnard received gainful experience while employed at Indian Township Police Department.  He was employed there for nearly five years and held the position of sergeant.

Local artist Paul Redding has re-opened his downtown art studio at 315 Main Street.  Now called “Charcoal City,” Redding’s gallery has a great showing of his own work for people to simply view, to purchase, or to see ideas for their own custom order.

A self-taught artist, Redding began painting with oils in 1956.  Today, however, his medium of choice is charcoal.

According to Maine law 7 MRS §3911, “It is unlawful for any dog, licensed or unlicensed, to be at large, except when used for hunting.”  This law defines “at large” to be “off the premises of the owner and not under the control of any person whose personal presence and attention would reasonably control the conduct of the animal.”

1992 Calais High School graduate and Passamaquoddy member Christopher Newell has been chosen to lead Bar Harbor’s Abbe Museum as executive director and senior partner with Wabanaki Nations.  The museum was founded in 1926 and documents Wabanaki culture, history, and art.  

Two passive acoustic data collection efforts are underway in the Gulf of Maine to gather information on North Atlantic right whales. One will deploy fixed archival-acoustic recorders mounted on the ocean bottom for a specific period of time. The other will use autonomous underwater vehicles called gliders, equipped to record acoustic information and report it back in near real-time.

ArtsEngageME, in partnership with the Maine Arts Commission, is working with six Washington County school districts to learn more about their current arts education programs and to prepare Arts Education Plans to increase student access to the arts over the next few years.  Input from parents and the greater community is also a key component.
