    A temporary barrier has been placed in the area that leads to the pier behind the Calais Library.
    According to Calais City Manager Mike Ellis, high tides over the years have flooded the area numerous times.  Due to this flooding, the waterfront pier has now been deemed unsafe.

  2. Local 6th Grader Spreads Kindness to Every School in America

    A sixth grader at Princeton Elementary School has made it possible for every school in the United States to have free access to YouUplift School Kindness Wall, an online platform that students, teachers, and families can use to send positive messages to each other.

    Victoria Polk took it upon herself to write a letter to Doug Reavis, the creator of the YouUplift platform, just two days after the tragic school shooting in Texas.

  5. Veterans Honored, Remembered During Calais Memorial Day Events

    Although no Memorial Day parade was held in Calais this year, other ceremonies to remember fallen heroes did occur, starting with the wreath laying ceremony at Ferry Point Bridge.

    A small group gathered downtown at the international bridge for the annual event with active duty service members, other veterans, and representatives from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Calais Fire-EMS.

  9. Washington County Community College Holds First in Person Graduation Ceremony in Two Years 

    For the first time in two years, Washington County Community College graduates were presented their diplomas in person.

    The 2022 commencement ceremony took place on Friday, May 20th at 11a.m. outside overlooking the beautiful St. Croix River on the campus lawn.
    After the graduates marched into the sound of ceremonial bagpipes performed by Ernie Smith, the Passamaquoddy Drummers performed, and the National Anthems were sung by Anne Scott.

    President Susan Mingo then took the stage to begin the ceremony.

    The girls upped their record to 10-2, picking up three wins last week:

    The Woodland Dragons baseball team is having a successful season, currently with a record of 11-1.

    On May 16, Coach Kenny Murphy and his team traveled to Jonesport-Beals High School, where they picked up a 14-4 win, thanks in part to Evan Curtis, who drove in four runners, with a single in the first and a triple in the fifth.

    The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Cobscook Bay State Park, and the Friends of the Moosehorn NWR invite children 16 and under, along with their families, to go fishing at Cobscook Bay State Park Headquarters Pond in Edmunds on Saturday, June 18.  The event marks the 24th annual fishing derby.

    “The State of Maine will stock brook trout into the pond just before the derby,” said Supervisory Wildlife Biologist Ray Brown.

    The Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry is honored to announce that it has received a $9,000 grant from the Washington County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.   28. Infant Formula Shortage Experienced Locally

    Over 40 percent of infant formula brands were sold out during the first week of May, according to a report by Datasembly.  That is up from 31 percent just three weeks prior.

    Across the nation, and including in Maine, many major retailers have placed limits on the amount of formula shoppers can purchase.  
    The shortage of baby formula can be attributed to the COVID-era supply chain issues, coupled with a top manufacturer’s recall in February.

I introduced myself to another attendee, and when he heard that I was a University Professor, the look on his face was one of horror and suspicion. He might as well as reached for some garlic and a crucifix to protect himself. His assumption that I was likely a left wing socialist plant sent to study aliens was not accurate, but would have been for the overwhelming majority of University faculty.

  42. Machias, Jonesboro Triple Homicide Trial to Begin this Month in Belfast

    Jury selection for the trial of Thomas Bonfanti of Northfield is set to begin May 23 in Belfast.

    “We’re anticipating three to four days to pick a jury and up to two weeks for the trial,” said Bonfanti’s attorney Jeffry Toothaker, who was appointed to the case on April 8.

    Bonfanti has entered a plea of not guilty, and earlier this year requested his trial be held in another county to avoid possible tainting of the jury pool by pre-trial publicity.

  44. Fiddleheads, a Maine Delicacy

    Fiddleheads are a springtime delicacy across Maine and New Brunswick, and in the downeast area, are nearly ready to be harvested.
    The ostrich fern fiddleheads can be identified by the brown, papery scale-like covering on the uncoiled fern.  Because they are perennial, they come back year after year, and according to University of Maine Cooperative Extension, nearly all ferns have fiddleheads, but not all fiddleheads are edible.
