On Monday, January 10, 2022, Washington County Sherriff’s Deputies received information about an altercation that happened at a home at 69 Jim’s Head Road in Lubec.

When deputies arrived at the residence, they discovered evidence outside the home that led investigators to believe something suspicious happened at the residence, and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit was called in to investigate.

With dropping temperatures and about a foot of snow on the ground, it can be a little hard to picture warmer temperatures and a lot clear enough in which to skateboard, but those affiliated with the Calais Skatepark are so excited to get summer rolling with a big announcement. For the second year in a row, the skatepark committee is excited to be able to offer the scholarship for a free week of skateboarding at Camp Woodward.

During mass last Sunday, the children at Immaculate Conception Church presented a check for $555.40 to the Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry.

The money came from a bake sale the children held at the church after a mass in November.

In 1992, the Worcester Wreath company in Harrington first sent wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery.  Those wreaths were placed in one of the older sections of the cemetery that had been receiving fewer visitors with each passing year.

University of Maine at Machias students will return to in-person classes on Tuesday, Jan. 18, according to a Jan. 4 press release from the UMaine system.

Though UMM has held in-person classes since September 2021, the announcement ends weeks of speculation following news that many New England schools, such as Harvard, have already announced students will return from winter break via remote learning due to the nationwide upsurge in COVID-19 cases.

If you saw a group of runners in Pembroke on New Year's Day, it was likely the Bold Coast Runners hosting a group to celebrate 2022.  

For the sixth year in a row, friends and club members joined together from Baileyville, Pembroke, Eastport, Addison, Lubec, Whiting, Perry and East Machias for a “No Fees, No Awards, No Aids, No Wimps” winter run.

Danielle Wheeler of Perry has been charged in the murder of her ex-boyfriend, 50-year-old Jason “Cowboy” Aubuchon of Eastport, who died by gunshot on Sunday, Dec. 26, just before 9 p.m., according to Maine State Police.

At Calais on December 22, Coach Ben Maloney’s Dragons came through with a 58-51 win over Coach Dean Preston’s Blue Devils.
Stats provided by the Dragon coaching staff showed Ethan Monk led the winners with 23 points, while Wyatt MacArthur chipped in with 21.  MacArthur also pulled down 11 rebounds.  
Brogan Brown added another 7, while Shain McIver and Reece Sabattus had 3 each.

Calais resident Stacy Crosby, who resides on Palmer Street, could not keep up with the elaborate Christmas display of her neighbors Bob and Gayle Greenlaw.  

Over the weekend, rather than attempt to upstage the dazzling show next door, Crosby affectionately gave tribute to the Greenlaw’s hard work by displaying her own type of clever show, the word “DITTO,” lit up brightly for all to see.

The man in the red suit came to town a week early.  Santa Claus visited the children of Baileyville and Baring on Sunday, December 19th.

With the help of Ray Faulkner and the Baileyville Fire Department, Santa made his rounds by fire engine, instead of sleigh.

In the meantime, local children dropped off their letters to Santa at the Woodland IGA, where a special mailbox was placed just for this occasion.

It all began with a question.

“I was wondering if it might be possible to decorate the bridge for Christmas?” asked Joel Ross of Lubec, posting Nov. 29 on Facebook. Readers enthusiastically applauded his idea, and this week for the first time ever, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Bridge —  and the saltwater beneath it —  shine with Christmas lights.

The bridge connects Lubec, the easternmost town in the nation, with Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada.

Residents of Eastport Nursing Home and Washington Place in Calais were treated to a musical visit by three Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra members on Tuesday, December 14. The program of holiday tunes was performed by the talented trio of Ann Simmons, violin, June Gregory, flute and Ellen Krajewski, cello.
