What's Up, Calais?

CDRC’s Harvest Festival was a successful day of fun for all. Thanks to all those businesses and organizations that hosted events and made it possible.

The City of Calais has announced that hydrant flushing will take place throughout October and November between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. During this routine maintenance, residents may notice temporarily discolored water or reduced water pressure. Officials advise avoiding laundry when the water appears discolored and suggest running the tap until it clears. For more information, residents can call 454-2760 or 454-2521 ext. 3.

Another city notice: A Public Hearing will be held by the city council this Thursday, October 9, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Calais City Building to determine whether the residential building at 489 South Street, Map 003 Block 007 Lot 011, is dangerous or a nuisance.

The annual Turkey-a-Thon will take place this Friday, October 10, marking its 21st year of helping provide holiday turkeys for families in need across the county. Volunteers will be stationed throughout the area to accept donations of any amount. Locally, contributions can be made at V.L. Tammaro in Calais and at GameTime Sports Bar & Grill in Baileyville.

Don’t forget, the final public baked bean supper of the year at All Saints United Methodist Church is next Thursday, October 16, beginning at 5 p.m. On the menu, alongside the beans, are corn scallop, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, rolls, and an assortment of desserts. The cost is $10 per person. These monthly public suppers will resume in March.

The Schoodic and Washington County Shrine Clubs are once again gearing up for the annual Feztival of Trees, taking place December 12-14, 2025, at Washington County Community College. Local businesses and organizations are invited to join in the holiday spirit by sponsoring a tree for this year’s event. The Feztival is now a great community tradition that not only spreads festive cheer, but also helps children through Shriners Hospitals and clinics in New England, Boston, and Montreal, as well as other local charities. Reach out to Frank Theriault via email at [email protected] for more details on entering a tree.

Send me your news, your shout-outs for good deeds done, or your well wishes to give, and I’ll be sure to share them here. Until next week, I hope you stay well, stay safe, and be happy.
