Washington Academy Outscores Woodland in Last Home Matchup of Season

The Woodland Lady Dragons fell to the Washington Academy Raiders at home on Tuesday, January 28, with a final score of 62-36.

Woodland held a slim lead after the first quarter, up 9-8, but the Raiders gained momentum in the second, outscoring the Dragons and taking a 29-19 advantage into halftime.

Karleigh Smith led the Dragons’ offense with 22 points, while Mishun Cornelius added 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Dive Team Recovers One of Two Scallopers Who Perished in F/V Sudden Impact Sinking

The body of one of two South Addison scallop fishermen lost when their boat, F/V Sudden Impact, sank on Jan. 18, in high winds and rough seas near Moose Cove, was recovered by a dive team on Feb. 2.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources reported on Feb. 2, that a team of “highly-skilled volunteer divers” located and recovered the body from inside Sudden Impact’s cabin. The body of the second crew member was not found on or near the wreckage.

Carter and Tango, Newest K9 Team at Sheriff’s Office

The Washington County Sheriff's Office has a new “Deputy Dog” with the arrival of K9 Tango and his handler, Cpl. Matt Carter.

Tango is an 18-month-old German Shepherd who began his training on drug and evidence detection, in addition to tracking, on Jan. 28 with Cpl Carter. 

“We are expecting big things from this team and they are a great addition to the agency,” the Sheriff’s office said in a post on its Facebook page. “We consider ourselves pretty fortunate, as we have several MCJA trainers.”

Lincoln Memorial Public Library Storytime

During Storytime last week at the Lincoln Memorial Public Library, it was the Pembroke students’ turn to be dropped off by their school bus. The book that was read, How Leo Learned to Be King by Marcus Pfister, gave much food for thought, culminating in the project of the day, making to-go cups for gifts to others, which were prepared with some cocoa powder in each one. The outdoor activity, with lots of snow piles around, involved a ball being hidden in different places for the children to find.

TThe Calais Lady Blue Devils hosted the Woodland Dragons on Friday, Feb. 7, in the final game of the regular season for both teams. Calais, with a strong 14-4 record, won the game, 46-33, and finished in fifth place, securing a home playoff game, where they faced George Stevens Academy on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Meanwhile, the Dragons wrapped up their season with a 1-17 record.

Illegal Vehicle Traffic Continues to Harm Snowmobile Trails

Princeton Honors Firefighter John McDowell for 40 Years of Service

There was a celebration in the Town of Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 15, to honor firefighter John McDowell, who was retiring from the Princeton Fire Department. McDowell has been an active member of the department since 1985.

Outside, in front of the fire station, the ladder truck was extended and a flag flown in McDowell’s honor. Inside, tables were set up and a wall display had been made with his name. A luncheon, donated by Princeton IGA and Town of Princeton, was served. There was also a specially designed cake.

Machias Valley Airport Eyed for Role in Summer Training Exercise

Machias Valley Airport is expected to play center stage for a summer military training exercise involving an MV-22 Osprey, military air traffic controllers, a Marine security detachment, and possibly members of other military branches.

Although still in very early planning stages, Machias Selectboard Vice Chairman Ben Edwards was unable to conceal his excitement over the prospect of seeing the airport play a role in a significant military training operation. 

The exercise is tentatively scheduled for late June or early July.

The junior high east and west basketball finals both took place last Monday evening, with the east side playing their games at the Machias Memorial High School gymnasium, while the west side played at the Narraguagus High School gym. State Police, Maine Corrections Officials Investigating Inmate’s Death at Machias Jail

Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North is conducting an investigation into the Feb. 19 death of an inmate found unresponsive in an intake cell at the Washington County Jail in Machias.

Jail Administrator Richard Rolfe said on Feb. 20 that 27-year-old Joseph Shields was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct late morning on Feb. 19 and booked into the jail. At about 5:15 p.m., Shields, who was still in an intake cell, was found unresponsive by officers at the jail.

Class was in session at the Feb. 20 County Commissioners meeting in Machias, as Sheriff Barry Curtis schooled Commissioner Billy Howard in defense of a letter Curtis wrote last month, outlining a policy of not responding to non-emergent complaints in towns with an active police department.
