After our story regarding the health inspector’s findings at Chen Garden was first published in the April 18, 2019 edition, we received many comments regarding concerns with the other Chinese restaurant in town.  We made several attempts to obtain copies of and information from inspections of that location but received no response from Emily Spencer, Public Information Officer of Maine’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or from Lisa Silva, Program Manager of that state department.

Community Support of St. Croix No. 1 Fire House Continues

It’s been 16 years since a small group of dedicated folks joined together to bring life back into St. Croix No. 1 Fire House, all in an effort to preserve the building’s rich history.  Through hundreds of fundraisers, including bake sales and raffles; thousands of dollars in donations from area merchants; many grants written; and too many hours to count put in by volunteers; the major project of restoring the fire house--built in 1874--is near completion of phase one.

Many understand that keeping unused or expired prescription medications that are no longer being used is a safety issue.  Accidental poisoning, misuse and even overdose can result when these medications get into the wrong hands. 

 Last Saturday was National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.  According to its website (www.takebackday.dea.gov), the day addresses an important public safety and public health issue.

Woodland Student Accepted into Princeton University

A student from Woodland Jr-Sr High School has been accepted into Princeton University. Senior Charles Newman will be a part of Princeton University’s Class of 2023. “I will be following a pre-health track, but haven’t decided on a major yet. Current major prospects are applied mathematics, computer science, economics, and operations research and financial engineering,” said Newman.

For Sherry Sivret, pageants have been something she has been participating in since high school and something she has found to be a meaningful part of her life. “It pushes me out of my comfort zone and pushes me to be a better person,” Sherry said.

Pembroke Accident Update

Troopers said the large pickup truck overturned and struck a tree.   Both men were not wearing seat belts and they were hauling a load of scrap metal on the trailer.  The crash took place about a mile and a half from the Route 1 intersection.

A fire at 848 South Meadow Road in Perry last Tuesday resulted in the total loss of a home and “at least two vehicles,” Perry Fire Chief Paula Frost said.

Frost said the fire was started in the garage where the homeowner was working on a vehicle.  It is believed that a spark went into some combustibles, causing them to ignite.

By her count, Frost said, there were 16 “apparatuses pumping and bringing water” to the scene, along with 40 firefighters.

Pembroke Crash Claims Life of One, Sends Another to Hospital

A single-vehicle accident last Wednesday morning, May 1st, claimed the life of an Edmunds man and sent another to the hospital.  The accident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Route 214 in Pembroke, about a mile and a half from the intersection of Route 1. 

 Stephen McCausland, spokesperson for the Maine State Police, said 35-year-old Michael Kilby of Edmunds was driving a 2008 Chevrolet K3500 pickup truck, towing a trailer with a load of scrap.  The truck lost control and went off the road, striking a tree.

Eighth graders from Calais Middle/High School will soon be going on their end-of-year class trip.  The fun trip is a tradition at CMHS and requires a lot of effort in planning from both the students and the parents.

Fundraising began at the beginning of the school year.  From raffles of various sorts to the sale of Christmas wreaths, among other things, raising the funds necessary for the three-day trip to Massachusetts takes the work of many.

Clean Up of Parks a Priority for Public Works

Last week, The Calais Advertiser received a photo from a concerned reader.  The photo, which the reader said was a recent one, showed debris dumped on the waterfront walkway.  The trash included an automobile tire and a tricycle. 

 As a result of the photo, The Calais Advertiser followed up with City Manager Mike Ellis. Ellis received an update from the city’s public works department about the area where the trash was found.  He assures residents that areas such as this one will be cleaned up soon.

MLB Jr. Home Run Derby to be Held in Calais

The Major League Baseball Jr. Home Run Derby is back for a second year in Calais. This fun and exciting youth competition is hosted by Calais-Area Fall Baseball, under the direction of coaches Matt Vinson and Matt Dana. 

 This local event is a free way for all area youngsters to showcase their hitting abilities, with the opportunity of competing at the National Finals in Cleveland during MLB All-Star Week in July.

First National Supports St. Croix Regional Tech Students

 

First National Bank recently announced a $500 donation to the St. Croix Regional Technical Center for the upcoming 2019 National Skills USA Competition.

Five St. Croix Regional Technical Center students will be traveling to Louisville, Kentucky in June to represent Maine in the 55th annual Skills USA Championships. The all state contest winners will compete against the clock in hands-on competitions demonstrating their SCRTC/C.N.A. trade expertise.

Cigarette Causes Fire on Apartment Building Deck

A Sunday morning fire was caused by “improperly disposed of cigarette butts,” according to Calais Fire Chief Ken Clark.  The department received the alarm to an apartment house at 91 North Street around 9 a.m. Sunday morning.  

“The cigarette butts were placed in a plastic cup outside the apartment on the deck next to the entrance door,” Chief Clark explained.

Food Drive Brings in Nearly a Ton and a Half of Food Donations

Always the second Saturday in May, the annual Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive took place across the United States last weekend.  It is the largest one-day food drive in the country and is hosted by National Association of Letter Carriers.

In the past 25 years, the food drive has delivered more than one billion pounds of food to local food pantries and shelters.  Helping the Calais letter carriers with the food drive collection were girls from Girl Scout Troops 1365 and 2253.

Meet Millie, the Cat with No Eyes

May is National Pet Month, a time to celebrate the benefits that pets bring to people’s lives--and vice versa.  One feline friend showing lots of love and affection to her owner is Millie, a cat who has never seen her owner, Greg Williams, because she has no eyes.

About 12 years ago, Greg saw Millie’s picture in The Machias Valley News Observer.  Millie was the featured cat that week by The Ark Animal Shelter in Cherryfield.

Truck Stuck in Soft Shoulder Causes Temporary Closure of Route 191

On Wednesday evening, May 8th, traffic on Route 191 in Cathance Township was at a standstill caused by a tractor trailer.  

There were many reports on social media of an 18-wheeler involved in an accident.  According to Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree of Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the truck had pulled to the side of the road.  When the wheels got into the soft shoulder, however, it caused the truck to get stuck.  No accident and no injuries occurred.

Democratic Party Controlled House and Senate Pass Taxpayer Funding for Abortion

For the first time in Maine, on May 16, Democrats controlling both the House and Senate in Augusta have passed taxpayer-supported abortion services under LD 820.

Many Mainers who objected to the use of taxpayer dollars for abortion attended the Committee Hearings in April and gave testimony.  Mainers testified that they did not want their tax dollars being used to fund abortion, which is an elective procedure 99% of the time.

Police in Massachusetts are searching for a former Princeton, Maine woman.  Jacqueline “Jackie” Coutinho, age 53, was last seen on the morning Wednesday, May 15th in Hinsdale, Massachusetts.  She had been spending time there with her sister for the last month.

Coutinho is described as a white female, approximately 5’ 6”, 130 pounds, with blonde and gray hair.  She was last seen wearing a purple and red sweater, blue jeans, and white sneakers.

Nurses’ Union Adds Pressure to Hospital Management with ‘Vigil for Patient Safety’

Approximately 70 people gathered last Thursday night at the downtown triangle park for a “Vigil for Patient Safety.”  Organized by Maine State Nurses Association (MSNA) members from Calais Regional Hospital (CRH), the purpose of the event, according to the MSNA members, was to draw attention to patient care conditions and employee treatment at the hospital.  Joining the nurses were other hospital staff and community members in support of their efforts.
