This Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon, there are seven free screenings happening across the state for children who may need services offered by the Shriners Hospitals for Children. In Calais, the clinic is being held at the Masonic Lodge at 10 Calais Avenue. Some of the conditions treated – all at no charge – by Shriners include scoliosis, spina bifida, burns, orthopedic issues, cleft lip/palate, sports injuries, and others. Learn more, including viewing the full list of services, at shrinerschildrens.org/en/pediatric-care.
The Shriners are also hosting their annual Anah Shrine Circus in Bangor next week, April 26, 27, and 28. Tickets can be purchased in advance right here in Calais at Tradewinds.
If you’re up for something different, be sure to check out the fun murder mystery dinner theater happening at Riverview Restaurant & Lounge on Friday, April 26. Follow them on Facebook for ticket and meal information.
The community-wide yard sale day is quickly approaching. This is an event organized by the ladies of the Calais Lioness Club. Yard sales will take place at various residences across town on Saturday, April 27. If you live out of town or need a more visible space, the ladies have reserved some spots at local businesses available for use. To get on the list so that bargain hunters will be sure to find your sale, or for more information, go to the Calais Lioness Club Facebook page. Watch the page also for the final list of yard sales.
The city is offering free dump days on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28. Calais residents, property owners, and businesses can acquire a free permit for the City of Calais Transfer Station by presenting vehicle registration at the revenue collector's window in the city building or right at the transfer station. The transfer station operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., with those same times on the free days. For further information on transfer station regulations and guidelines, individuals can reach out to the city building at 207-454-2521 or visit calaismaine.org/departments/solid-waste-recycling.
Earth Day is Monday, April 22, and representatives of Calais Walmart will be hosting a park clean-up at the waterfront from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be planting trees and cooking hotdogs for the community. Everyone is welcome. Following the clean-up, they will provide a free barbecue cookout for the volunteers.
Set for early next month is Calais Community Hospital’s Auxiliary's Craft & Vendor fair. It will take place on May 4 at Calais Elementary School. Those interested in being a vendor can access the online registration form at the bottom of the Auxiliary's Gift Shop page at calaishospital.org.
It seems spring weather has officially arrived – finally. Be on the lookout for the beautiful hanging flower baskets on the light poles, thanks to CDRC. The group has some big things in the works, including some upcoming concerts in the park. You can learn more by following on Facebook CDRC - Calais Downtown Revitalization Coalition.
