Nearly 70 people were in attendance for Downeast Broadband Utility’s Business After Hours presentation on Wednesday, June 12th.  The public meeting was held at Calais Motor Inn and presented by St. Croix Valley Chamber of Commerce with sponsorship by Downeast Broadband Utility, First National Bank, and Downeast Economic Development.

A young Calais boy sustained serious injuries late last Wednesday afternoon, June 12th while sitting at a backyard campfire, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Wyatte Chandler, age 1 ½, was sitting with his mother Courtnie Chandler when his father, Joshua Barnard, poured a flammable liquid over the fire.  The liquid pouring from the bottle ignited, at which time Barnard instinctively dropped the bottle, accidentally spilling some of the contents on Wyatte.  

(left) It’s all fun and games until you get thrown in jail. One of the craziest things about the Hokey Pokey Fair is throwing your friends in jail for just a quarter, but a quarter will get you bailed out, too.

In last week’s The Calais Advertiser, we shared a story on Charlotte Dial-a-Ride, a program that offers access to transportation to residents of Charlotte County, NB.  This week we share information on Downeast Community Partners (DCP), an organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life and reduce the impact of poverty in Downeast communities.  One way DCP does this is through its transportation service.

The Town of Princeton will be buzzing with excitement on Saturday, June 22nd for its annual Fresh Water Festival.  

This is the fourth year Princeton Parks and Recreation Committee (PPRC) has organized the activities, but PPRC President Jan Campbell said that for many years the Fresh Water Festival “was a huge weekend-long event.”

At a luncheon last Thursday, June 6th, a group of members from the St. Croix No. 1 Fire House Association, along with City Manager Mike Ellis, recognized Jack Smith and his sons, John and Sheridan, from Border Electric with a plaque of appreciation.

“Fifteen years ago, Jack made a commitment to rewire the firehouse as a donation and as of May 20th, 2019, Jack, his boys and his crews have honored that commitment,” Dick Barnard, President of the Association, stated to the group.

Walking the Calais Riverfront Walkway is a great way to get some exercise.  It’s also great for a simple nature walk, with birds and deer frequently seen.  What one mom did not expect her children and their father to see, however, was a mother bear and her two cubs.

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, vape pens and mods, are battery-operated devices used to inhale--or “vape”--an aerosol, which typically contains nicotine, flavorings and other harmful chemicals.  Many may have heard the term “Juul,” a brand-name e-cigarette, or the term “juuling,” which is another word for vaping.

A beautiful sunny day in Baileyville, Maine was the setting for 23 students facing the last milestone in their high school career.  Graduation day 2019 officially began at 9 a.m.

 Students marched in to the traditional Pomp & Circumstance by Sir Edward Elgar.  Erin Shirley led the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and Superintendent William Braun made his opening remarks.

While the current school year has yet to finish, the school committee is already looking ahead to make sure the schools are staffed for the start of the new school year in the fall. The school committee started the hiring process at last Wednesday’s meeting by reviewing the Probationary Contracts and First Year Continuing contracts.

Each year the students at Calais High School and schools all across the state get the chance to take a class that helps them build skills that will help them far beyond high school. At the end of the year, the Jobs for Maine Graduates program holds an end-of-the-year ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of the students over the course of the year.

Approximately 70 people gathered last Thursday night at the downtown triangle park for a “Vigil for Patient Safety.”  Organized by Maine State Nurses Association (MSNA) members from Calais Regional Hospital (CRH), the purpose of the event, according to the MSNA members, was to draw attention to patient care conditions and employee treatment at the hospital.  Joining the nurses were other hospital staff and community members in support of their efforts.

Memorial Day is a US federal holiday that remembers the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  Last Saturday at Calais Cemetery, the over 500 Veterans and fallen soldiers buried there were remembered, thanks to the many local volunteers who dedicated themselves to placing flags on each grave.

For the first time in Maine, on May 16, Democrats controlling both the House and Senate in Augusta have passed taxpayer-supported abortion services under LD 820.

Many Mainers who objected to the use of taxpayer dollars for abortion attended the Committee Hearings in April and gave testimony.  Mainers testified that they did not want their tax dollars being used to fund abortion, which is an elective procedure 99% of the time.
