1. Early morning fire in Milltown, N.B.

     

    Early morning fire call in Milltown, N.B. at 15 Pleasant St in St. Stephen. The fire was concentrated in the attic of the building and Calais Fire Department aided their Canadian neighbors. Saint Stephen Fire along with Oak Bay Fire Department were on scene. No one was hurt.

  2. St. Kateri Donates to Food Pantry

    Fr. Kevin Martin from St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish provided a $3,500 check to Fr. David Sivret, President of Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry. The money will be used to purchase and install a large upright freezer.  St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish applied for a grant from Catholic Charities Maine.  A $2,000 grant was approved from the “Matthew 25 Award.” The remainder was donated by a St. Kateri Parish family who wished to remain anonymous.   11. Benefit Planned for Toddler Burned Last Week

    A young Calais boy sustained serious injuries late last Wednesday afternoon, June 12th while sitting at a backyard campfire, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

    Wyatte Chandler, age 1 ½, was sitting with his mother Courtnie Chandler when his father, Joshua Barnard, poured a flammable liquid over the fire.  The liquid pouring from the bottle ignited, at which time Barnard instinctively dropped the bottle, accidentally spilling some of the contents on Wyatte.

  12. Calais Student, Named May 2019 STAR Student of the Month By Maine Connections Academy

     

    Maine Connections Academy (MCA), the state’s first online public charter school, has selected Lana Wilson, an 8th grader from Calais, as its May 2019 STAR Student of the Month.   

    This is Lana’s second year at MCA after having first been a student in public school and being home-schooled. Once her parents discovered MCA, Lana tried it out and “I really loved it.” Her online course schedule includes classes in English, algebra, science, social studies art and physical education. Her favorite teacher is Mr. Hoskins, who teaches English.

  20. McDonald’s Manager Quashes Rumor that Restaurant Will Close for Renovations

    The manager of the Calais McDonald’s has quashed a rumor that the fast-food restaurant will be closing for renovations.

    It was recently reported by some residents that the restaurant at 191 North Street would be temporarily closing for three to six months while it underwent a complete overhaul.  Dan Barnard, manager at the restaurant, said this is untrue.

    At a luncheon last Thursday, June 6th, a group of members from the St. Croix No. 1 Fire House Association, along with City Manager Mike Ellis, recognized Jack Smith and his sons, John and Sheridan, from Border Electric with a plaque of appreciation.

  24. Pratt Looks to Field a Calais-Woodland-Shead Football Team

    The once Silverados football team, made up of students from both Calais and Woodland High Schools, proved to be successful during its four seasons of varsity-level play.  One of its players, Cam Shorey, was even offered a full scholarship to play football at UNH, a division 1 school.  The team, coached by Ian Pratt and funded by the Pratt auto dealership, however, dissolved in 2012 after difficulties attracting interested kids to play.

    First National Bank recently announced it has made donations totaling $2,200 to eleven Emergency Medical Service organizations in the bank’s market area in response to National EMS Week.

    In 1974, President Gerald Ford proclaimed EMS Week to celebrate and recognize EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our nation. The 45th annual National EMS Week was held May 19th through May 25, 2019.

  30. Fire Marshal Investigating Union Street Fire

    On Friday afternoon, May 24th, Calais Fire-EMS responded to a structure fire at 180 Union Street.  

    According to Fire Chief Ken Clark, fire was coming out the second floor window when his department arrived at the scene.  “The fire was contained to that room, but heat and smoke damage was throughout the building,” he said.

    Chief Clark said the cause of the fire “was deemed to have been caused by a human element, so the fire marshal’s office was called in to investigate.”

    Approximately 70 people gathered last Thursday night at the downtown triangle park for a “Vigil for Patient Safety.”  Organized by Maine State Nurses Association (MSNA) members from Calais Regional Hospital (CRH), the purpose of the event, according to the MSNA members, was to draw attention to patient care conditions and employee treatment at the hospital.  Joining the nurses were other hospital staff and community members in support of their efforts.

    Police in Massachusetts are searching for a former Princeton, Maine woman.  Jacqueline “Jackie” Coutinho, age 53, was last seen on the morning Wednesday, May 15th in Hinsdale, Massachusetts.  She had been spending time there with her sister for the last month.

    Coutinho is described as a white female, approximately 5’ 6”, 130 pounds, with blonde and gray hair.  She was last seen wearing a purple and red sweater, blue jeans, and white sneakers.

  43. Democratic Party Controlled House and Senate Pass Taxpayer Funding for Abortion

    For the first time in Maine, on May 16, Democrats controlling both the House and Senate in Augusta have passed taxpayer-supported abortion services under LD 820.

    Many Mainers who objected to the use of taxpayer dollars for abortion attended the Committee Hearings in April and gave testimony.  Mainers testified that they did not want their tax dollars being used to fund abortion, which is an elective procedure 99% of the time.
