  8. Truck Stuck in Soft Shoulder Causes Temporary Closure of Route 191

    On Wednesday evening, May 8th, traffic on Route 191 in Cathance Township was at a standstill caused by a tractor trailer.  

    There were many reports on social media of an 18-wheeler involved in an accident.  According to Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree of Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the truck had pulled to the side of the road.  When the wheels got into the soft shoulder, however, it caused the truck to get stuck.  No accident and no injuries occurred.

  9. City of Calais Looks at Leasing Space for a Cell Tower

    At the council meeting on Thursday night, the Calais City Council heard a proposal from Wireless Partners regarding placement of a cell tower in the center of Calais. Todd Rich of Wireless Partners and Rising Tide Towers came before the council to present the proposal to build a cell tower in the Meridian Park on the hill by the recreation department parking lot.

    May is National Pet Month, a time to celebrate the benefits that pets bring to people’s lives--and vice versa.  One feline friend showing lots of love and affection to her owner is Millie, a cat who has never seen her owner, Greg Williams, because she has no eyes.

    About 12 years ago, Greg saw Millie’s picture in The Machias Valley News Observer.  Millie was the featured cat that week by The Ark Animal Shelter in Cherryfield.

    The three full-time and two part-time officers of Calais Police Department have recently been outfitted with load-bearing vests, a transition from regular duty belts that many departments are making.  As well, the officers have recently begun using body cameras and will see tasers in the near future.

  16. Food Drive Brings in Nearly a Ton and a Half of Food Donations

    Always the second Saturday in May, the annual Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive took place across the United States last weekend.  It is the largest one-day food drive in the country and is hosted by National Association of Letter Carriers.

    In the past 25 years, the food drive has delivered more than one billion pounds of food to local food pantries and shelters.  Helping the Calais letter carriers with the food drive collection were girls from Girl Scout Troops 1365 and 2253.

  17. Cigarette Causes Fire on Apartment Building Deck

    A Sunday morning fire was caused by “improperly disposed of cigarette butts,” according to Calais Fire Chief Ken Clark.  The department received the alarm to an apartment house at 91 North Street around 9 a.m. Sunday morning.  

    “The cigarette butts were placed in a plastic cup outside the apartment on the deck next to the entrance door,” Chief Clark explained.

  18. First National Supports St. Croix Regional Tech Students

     

    First National Bank recently announced a $500 donation to the St. Croix Regional Technical Center for the upcoming 2019 National Skills USA Competition.

    Five St. Croix Regional Technical Center students will be traveling to Louisville, Kentucky in June to represent Maine in the 55th annual Skills USA Championships. The all state contest winners will compete against the clock in hands-on competitions demonstrating their SCRTC/C.N.A. trade expertise.

    The Major League Baseball Jr. Home Run Derby is back for a second year in Calais. This fun and exciting youth competition is hosted by Calais-Area Fall Baseball, under the direction of coaches Matt Vinson and Matt Dana. 

     This local event is a free way for all area youngsters to showcase their hitting abilities, with the opportunity of competing at the National Finals in Cleveland during MLB All-Star Week in July.

    Last week, The Calais Advertiser received a photo from a concerned reader.  The photo, which the reader said was a recent one, showed debris dumped on the waterfront walkway.  The trash included an automobile tire and a tricycle. 

     As a result of the photo, The Calais Advertiser followed up with City Manager Mike Ellis. Ellis received an update from the city’s public works department about the area where the trash was found.  He assures residents that areas such as this one will be cleaned up soon.

    Eighth graders from Calais Middle/High School will soon be going on their end-of-year class trip.  The fun trip is a tradition at CMHS and requires a lot of effort in planning from both the students and the parents.

    Fundraising began at the beginning of the school year.  From raffles of various sorts to the sale of Christmas wreaths, among other things, raising the funds necessary for the three-day trip to Massachusetts takes the work of many.

  27. Pembroke Crash Claims Life of One, Sends Another to Hospital

    A single-vehicle accident last Wednesday morning, May 1st, claimed the life of an Edmunds man and sent another to the hospital.  The accident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Route 214 in Pembroke, about a mile and a half from the intersection of Route 1. 

     Stephen McCausland, spokesperson for the Maine State Police, said 35-year-old Michael Kilby of Edmunds was driving a 2008 Chevrolet K3500 pickup truck, towing a trailer with a load of scrap.  The truck lost control and went off the road, striking a tree.

    A fire at 848 South Meadow Road in Perry last Tuesday resulted in the total loss of a home and “at least two vehicles,” Perry Fire Chief Paula Frost said.

    Frost said the fire was started in the garage where the homeowner was working on a vehicle.  It is believed that a spark went into some combustibles, causing them to ignite.

    By her count, Frost said, there were 16 “apparatuses pumping and bringing water” to the scene, along with 40 firefighters.

    Troopers said the large pickup truck overturned and struck a tree.   Both men were not wearing seat belts and they were hauling a load of scrap metal on the trailer.  The crash took place about a mile and a half from the Route 1 intersection.

Senior Charles Newman will be a part of Princeton University’s Class of 2023. “I will be following a pre-health track, but haven’t decided on a major yet.     It’s been 16 years since a small group of dedicated folks joined together to bring life back into St. Croix No. 1 Fire House, all in an effort to preserve the building’s rich history.  Through hundreds of fundraisers, including bake sales and raffles; thousands of dollars in donations from area merchants; many grants written; and too many hours to count put in by volunteers; the major project of restoring the fire house--built in 1874--is near completion of phase one.

  44. St. Stephen Kiwanis Trade Show Set to Host Over 60 Vendors

    The Garcelon Civic Center in St. Stephen will again be the setting for the annual Kiwanis Trade Show.  The event, now in its sixth year, takes place the first weekend of May, this year, Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th.

     As indicative in its title—St. Stephen Kiwanis Trade Show—the event is a major fundraiser for the local Kiwanis.  Vending fees go straight to the organization, directly impacting the club’s ability to fund youth activities in the St. Stephen area.
