What's Up, Calais?

A big thank you goes out to the National Honor Society at Calais High School for once again organizing the community-wide Easter Egg Hunt. Despite the rainy weather, the fun carried on! NHS moved their hunt indoors to Calais Elementary School, making sure kids still had a great time. Across town, residents joined in by placing eggs on their lawns, and several local businesses helped make the day even more special by also having fun-filled eggs for kiddos. It was a great show of community spirit!

Troop 1702 will be hosting their final cookie booth of the season this Saturday, April 26, at Calais IGA from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Swing by to stock up on your favorite treats and support a great group of local girls. Not craving cookies for yourself? Consider donating a box to the Eastport Senior Center. The troop will be accepting donations on-site. Or, if Franklin Street is more convenient, Troop 2252 will be having a cookie stand from 9 a.m. to noon at 19 Franklin Street.

The American Red Cross will be in town for its Home Fire Safety Event, offering free smoke alarm installations for Calais residents in need. Each 30-minute visit includes alarm checks or replacements, plus fire prevention education and escape planning. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-464-6692 (option 4) or visit www.redcross.org/EndHomeFiresNNE.

The Calais Lioness Club’s annual community yard sale returns on April 26! While the club won’t be hosting their own table, they encourage everyone to participate by setting up a sale or visiting others. Last year’s event brought out shoppers from near and far; don’t miss the fun! To view or join the list of participating addresses, visit the Calais Lioness Club Facebook page.

Also on Saturday, celebrate Wabanaki art, culture, and community at the Wabanaki Spring Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wabanaki Culture Center. For more information, contact Lynn Mitchell at 207-454-2126.

Mark your calendar for the free community dinner at Second Baptist Church, 21 Church Street, on Friday, May 2, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. On the menu is ham, potatoes, vegetables, salad, and dessert.

Send me your news, your shout-outs for good deeds done, or your well wishes to give, and I’ll be sure to share them here. Until next week, I hope you stay well, stay safe, and be happy.
