Representative Ken “Bucket” Davis (R-East Machias) received unanimous approval for his bill to designate the last Saturday in May as Maine Alewife Day during a meeting of the Legislature’s State and Local Government Committee on February 16. Davis, who has taught dozens of seventh and eighth graders about the Down East tradition of cold smoking alewives at one of the last remaining smokehouses on the Maine coast, submitted the bill for another harvester in the Midcoast who is also trying to keep the heritage fishery alive.
