On April 4th, a family in Baileyville suffered the loss of their home and nearly all of their belongings.  The home, at 648 Houlton Road, was occupied by residents Brian Seavey, Tasha Jordan, and their children Joshua, age 13, and Conor, age 12, who has autism.  They did not have fire insurance.

Fire Chief John McPhee said his department was called out at about 2:20 p.m. that day.  Although the house was still standing after the fire was extinguished, it was “a complete loss,” he said.  Chief McPhee explained that the windy conditions of the day had made things even more difficult for the firefighters.

A space heater was the cause of the fire, according to Seavey’s sister Crystal Donovan and also is what Seavey told the fire chief on the day of the incident.

Chief McPhee said that Seavey did receive burns and had to be treated at Calais Regional Hospital.  He was released the same day.  Donovan said the fire spread so quickly that the family “barely made it out.”

An account at Downeast Credit Union for those wishing to help the family has been opened by Donovan, under her name but labeled as “Fire Fund for the Seaveys.”  “All proceeds are going towards getting them back on their feet, a place a live, clothes, appliances, and furniture,” she said.

According to Donovan, there have not been any further fundraisers planned.  Her cousin has started a GoFundMe account (www.gofundme.com/fire-fund-for-seaver-family), but donors need to remember that for donations made via a GoFundMe account, a fee per donation is deducted.  These fees go directly to GoFundMe’s payment processor.

“It’s been a very difficult time, especially for the kids,” Donovan said.  “They had no insurance on the house and they lost nearly everything. The devastation this has caused has been awful.  It’s an extremely stressful situation.“
