St. Croix Historical Society will host its next meeting this Monday, October 6, at 7 p.m., featuring a screening of the historic film From Stump to Ship, filmed in 1930 in Machias, alongside slides from the society’s collections showcasing logging operations and lumber mills in Calais and Milltown. The film, which survives as a vivid record of the long log business, presents highly detailed, year-round scenes that were originally accompanied by a script written for the silent footage in the 1930s. Today, the soundtrack is brought to life by Tim Sample, renowned Maine humorist, who narrates in the role of the filmmaker, Alfred Ames. The event is open to the public by donation, and light refreshments will be served. The historical society meets at 527 Main Street, next to Holmes Cottage.
On Tuesday, October 7, parents and caregivers of Calais Elementary School students are invited to a casual, no-pressure gathering to get involved, share ideas, and discuss upcoming activities such as fundraising, the Halloween Dance, Trunk or Treat, and more, all through the PTO. Don’t forget, the public baked bean supper at All Saints United Methodist Church is Thursday, October 16, beginning at 5 p.m. On the menu with the beans are corn scallop, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, rolls, and an assortment of desserts.
