What's Up, Calais?

Are you curious about where our municipal candidates stand?  Join them this Sunday for an open conversation.  This informal gathering will take place at Milltown Coffee on Sunday, the 27th, from noon  to 2 p.m.  It’s a great opportunity for the community to engage in casual discussions with the candidates.  It is my understanding that incumbents Elery Beale and James Macdonald will not be attending; however, candidates Brian Nicholas, Peter Foster, and Bryan Stevens have confirmed their participation. There are two seats open on the city council for a three-year term each.

This Friday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., all adults are welcome to attend the Calais Free Library’s Soup and Poetry Night. One can read their own poetry, someone else’s, or simply sit and enjoy. For more information, contact the library at 207-454-2758.

The Calais Lioness Club worked tirelessly at a road toll on Saturday, and those passing through showed their generosity, acknowledging the club’s dedication to helping others. Next up for the club as a fundraiser is collecting donations at the door of the upcoming Halloween party at Ceaser’s Pub & Grill. This will begin at 8 p.m., this Saturday, Oct. 26. Costumes are encouraged, but not required, and there will be a DJ and dancing.

For the kids, this Saturday is the annual Harvest Party at Second Baptist Church. This fun, family-friendly event begins at 5 p.m. There will be hot dogs, games, and a cakewalk. Happy, friendly costumes are encouraged, and all are welcome.

On Monday, Oct. 28, Calais Community Hospital is getting into the Halloween fun by hosting an event for families from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will be treats and prizes, crafts, and a blowup maze, plus more.

Don’t forget to email a photo of your decorated home to [email protected] by Oct. 28 to get entered into their Halloween decorating contest. Prizes include gift cards worth $100, $75, and $25.

Mark your calendars for the event of the year: St. Croix Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards Night and Gala on Friday, Nov. 22. This event is not just for chamber members; all can attend. The evening includes business awards, dinner, and great entertainment. This year’s event is being catered by East Coast BBQ and will be held at the Princeton Rod & Gun Club. More details will be included in an upcoming publication.

Send me your news, your shout-outs for good deeds done, or your well wishes to give, and I’ll be sure to share them here. Until next week, I hope you stay well, stay safe, and be happy.
