  2. Eastern Area Agency on Aging Celebrates Grand Opening of Calais Access Point

     

    Eastern Area Agency on Aging (EAAA) marked the grand opening of its new access point at Calais United Methodist Church with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday morning.  The event featured a speaking program led by Executive Director Tabatha Caso, Nutrition Director Chris Street, and Nutrition Supervisor Kim Stanley.  Attendees were also given a tour of the new facility, showcasing the range of services it will offer.

ATVs of all sizes and shapes can be found most anytime at local eateries, including Dunkin’s, Pat’s Pizza, Mason’s Downeast, Helen's Restaurant, and River’s Edge takeout. But since 2022, a dedicated group of local ATV enthusiasts has been mustering annually at a jamboree dedicated to their off-road trail machines.

  6. Wild Blueberry Dome Opens for Season

     

    The iconic "blueberry dome" in Downeast Maine, now the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center, is reopening on Thursday, June 27th.  Founded by Dell and Marie Emerson in 2017, the nonprofit aims to educate visitors about Maine’s ancient wild blueberry ecosystem.

    The dome features interactive exhibits, including stories from local blueberry growers, student-created dioramas, and fine art prints by photographer David Brooks Stess. Outside, visitors can explore the Wild Blueberry Walkway, a trail with wild blueberries, a pollinator garden, and heritage displays.

  11. Brendan Leddy Memorial Fund and Mad Ants Partnership

     

    In January, the Brendan Leddy Memorial Fund teamed up with the NBA G League's Indiana Mad Ants to feature the fund's logo on jerseys.     Despite widespread awareness of the dangers of vaping, many continue the habit.  However, three students from Calais Middle/High School are determined to change that trend among their peers.

    Kendall Farm on Boyden Lake enjoyed ideal weather for the third annual Rhubarb Festival on June 1, contrasting last year's chilly conditions.  With temperatures at a comfortable 65 degrees, over 340 attendees celebrated all things rhubarb.

    Highlights included the tasting table, music by local band Oatmeal Bear, and emcee John Z. Festival merchandise like T-shirts, hats, rhubarb barbecue sauce, and bumper stickers were available.

    Rebellion, in the name of independence, doesn’t wait for perfect weather. And cloudy skies and a little drizzle or rain shower were not going to prevent Margaretta Days festivities from taking place June 14 and 15 in and around the shire town.

    The annual celebration honors events that culminated on the morning of June 12, 1775, with the Battle of the Margaretta, months after the more famous battles of Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, which are widely considered to be the start of the Revolutionary War.

    The 2024 spring baseball and softball season was the most successful in a very long time for Washington County schools.

    Four teams went into the postseason with legitimate chances to make a deep playoff run and play for a regional championship.  Three of those teams did reach the title game, but unfortunately, they all ended in heartbreaking defeats.

    Calais Elementary School is on a mission to revamp its playground, and Principal Sue Carter is leading the charge.  

    Carter recently shared the pressing need for a safer and more engaging outdoor space for students.  With the current playground showing signs of wear and age, the school is embarking on a fundraising drive to secure the necessary funds for a much-needed upgrade.

  25. CES Swing Set Raffle Brings in Money for New Playground

     

    As part of their commitment to upgrade the playground, Calais Elementary School organized a fundraising initiative by selling raffle tickets on a new Appleton swing set.  Principal Sue Carter revealed the winning ticket on Monday, June 10, announcing Linda Preston as the lucky winner.  Nearly $1,700 was raised by the raffle, and students and staff thank all who purchased and sold tickets.  (Photo by Jayna Smith)

    Ham radio operators from the St. Croix Valley Amateur Radio Club in the Washington and Charlotte County area will be participating in a national amateur radio exercise from 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, until mid-morning on Sunday, June 23. The event is ARRL Field Day (www.arrl.org/FieldDay), an annual amateur radio activity organized since 1933 by ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio in the United States.

    On Wednesday, June 5th, the Calais Lions Club hosted its 84th Annual Installation Night.  Founded in 1940, the club has upheld this tradition to install new members and officers and to honor a standout member with the Lion of the Year Award.

    This year's event was particularly significant, marking the first time the Calais Lions have installed female members.  Following a change in the bylaws by Lions International, the Calais chapter welcomed three local women. Their contributions have already been invaluable to the club's mission.

    At last Tuesday’s Princeton Board of Selectmen's meeting was the dedication of Princeton’s Annual Report. The selection is kept secret until the award is presented. This has been a special honor and tradition since 1976-77. The first award was given to Ruth J. Shaw, who was the town treasurer for 38 years, a registered nurse, a school teacher, and had over 20 years with the post office, as well as being active in the church and Princeton Women’s Club.

    The top-ranked Katahdin High School Cougars, of Stacyville, who reached the Northern Maine Class D Championship last year before falling to Bangor Christian, faced off against the Woodland Dragons in a Northern Maine semi-final baseball game on Saturday, June 8, 2024.

    After a lengthy rain delay, Woodland surged ahead with an 8-0 lead by the fourth inning and ultimately secured an 8-3 victory.

    St. Croix Regional Technical Center has announced the Student of the Year for 2024, Ethan Barnard. 

    Ethan exemplifies the ideals of CTE through his dedication to his trade, his school, and his community. He started at St. Croix in the 8th grade exploratory program. From this, he planned his high school career to maximize his time at the tech center. 

    Ethan took Automotive Technology during his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He even managed to add two periods of welding during his senior year.

    A small crowd, including active duty service members, veterans, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, and Calais Fire-EMS personnel, gathered downtown at the international bridge for the annual wreath-laying event.

    It isn’t every day one of the world’s best childhood golfers comes to Downeast Maine, but last week, junior high students from area elementary schools packed into gyms across Washington County as part of a speaker series organized by Down East and Calais Community hospitals to hear Kyle Quilausing tell of how a ten-year-old phenom battling Tiger Woods at the top of the world junior golf rankings spiraled out of control and became “a menace to his homeland.”
