The popular eatery Crumbs is set to reopen at a new location, with a new look, and with a slight change to its name.  Crumbs Cafe & Bake Shoppe is now officially Crumbs Cafe & Coffee Bar and has moved to the other end of downtown, to 405 Main Street, right across from the triangle park.  The cafe will reopen at 7 a.m. on Thursday, April 1.

McDonald’s Construction to Start April 5

Almost a year after construction was initially set to begin, the McDonald’s in Calais has a definite date for the demolition of the current restaurant. Back in November 2019, the Calais Planning Board heard a proposal about the plans to demolish the current building and start construction on a new one, which they approved for an estimated construction date of April 2020. With restrictions due to COVID-19, construction was delayed with no new start date planned.

Internet Outage? Not For Many in Calais and Baileyville

All Spectrum customers were without internet and tv service for part of the evening on Monday.  An outage occurred that lasted approximately three hours. Spectrum reported that the outage occurred to its customers nationwide as a result of two separate fiber breaks in its network.

Hundreds of kids from the greater-Calais area came out Saturday morning in pursuit of treat-filled Easter eggs.  About 75 residences and nearly 20 businesses and organizations participated by placing plastic-filled eggs around their homes, their businesses, their churches, or at parks.

Calais Skatepark Committee Creates Memorial Scholarship

For about 20 years, Calais Skate Park has been a fixture in town, seeing changes in popularity and use over the two decades. One thing that hasn’t changed is the dedication and devotion of the charter members and advisor Randy McCormick. The labor of love project began in the labs, classrooms, and hearts at Calais High School with a dedicated group of students and a supportive teacher designing and bringing the project from the drawing board to a physical manifestation.

Most are familiar with the former Hair I Am hair salon owned by Cindy Wartman.  Now, it’s back, but in a new location and some additional stylists and services.

Wartman explained that since the building on the corner of Main and Monroe Streets sold, the location where she worked at Mercier’s, she decided to transform the former candy store next door into a new, welcoming space for Hair I Am.

• The ice went out on Cathance Lake on April 1st, two to three weeks before “normal.” Clearly, a sign of the climate change apocalypse that Governor Mills and her fellow climate alarmists have been mewling about and demanding we stop using fossil fuels (only the basis of our civilization). The carbon warming apocalypse has so far meant earlier planting times, a longer growing season, record crop outputs (carbon dioxide is also known as plant food) and steady employment for climate alarmists. It must be stopped.

Rare Bird Sighting in Washington County

A rare bird has been sighted right here in Washington County by a few locals. 

Sandhill cranes have been spotted multiple times in the past month. 

Although they have not been seen on the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge yet, rangers and other employees hope to see some soon. 

“I have never seen sandhill cranes on the refuge, and neither has any current refuge employee,” said Refuge Wildlife Biologist, Ray Brown.

Perry Fire Chief Paula Frost Retires After Many Years of Service

On Tuesday, April 6th Paula Frost stepped down from her position as Chief of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department.

After leading the department as chief for the past 25 years, she has decided to hang up her airpack for the last time.

“I joined the Perry Fire Department in 1988,” said Frost. “In the early days, women were not allowed to be on some departments. I was always interested in a challenge.”

Fiddleheads, the young coiled fronds of the ostrich fern, are a springtime delicacy in Maine and New Brunswick, and in other Northeastern states and Maritime provinces.  According to University of Maine Cooperative Extension, nearly all ferns have fiddleheads, but not all fiddleheads are edible.

In 2020, the CDC reported that approximately 1 in 54 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to 2016 data, with 1 in 34 boys identified with autism and 1 in 144 girls identified with autism.  The CDC defines autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder: ASD) as “…a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges.”
