McVicar Scores 1,000 Points

 

The first shot of Saturday’s Lady Blue Devils basketball game against the Jonesport-Beals Royalettes was a three-pointer put up by Sophia McVicar.  McVicar made the basket just 12 seconds into the game to earn her 1,000th high school career point.  

McVicar, a senior, went on to drop a game-high 21 points as the Lady Blue Devils cruised by the Royalettes in a 70-35 victory.  The game was the final game of regular season play.

Calais Girls Claim DAC Championship

 

In a typical season, ending the basketball season with a win would mean a state championship title.  This year, however, with no fans, the elimination of the game-start jump ball, and all players masked up, the final win in Washington County means the Downeast Athletic Conference Championship.

Coach Bill McVicar’s Lady Blue Devils earned that DAC Championship title last week as the grand finale to the 2021 basketball season.  After cruising by the Shead Tigerettes in the semi-finals on Wednesday, the girls faced the Lady Knights of Narraguagus on Friday.

Typically a fall sport for local high schools, volleyball was cut on Sept. 1 by the state’s health, education, and athletic leaders.  This decision came out of concerns of the indoor sport causing an elevated risk of COVID-19 transmission, leaving volleyball sidelined until later in the school year.
