Local Powerlifter Clinches Gold, Set State Record

 

Wayne Sowers, of Baring Plantation, recently competed at the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters World Champions in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he received a gold medal for the bench press (338 lbs.) and two silver medals, 407 lbs. for the deadlift and 745 lbs. for the push/pull (total).  Sowers competed in the 242 lb. class for the 68-74 age group. He also set three Maine state records for these lifts. For the third year in a row, Sowers is the reigning World Champion in the Bench Press.

Sophomore Karleigh Smith showcased her scoring ability by netting 18 points, leading Woodland to a 30-17 victory over Calais on Friday, December 22.  Smith's performance also included contributions of six rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

Freshman Mishun Cornelius made her presence felt with six points and an impressive 12 rebounds for the Lady Dragons.

Local Young Jiu-Jitsu Talents Shine at Good-Fight Sub-Only World Championship

Local young talents, eight-year-old RJ Kendall and ten-year-old Connor Grass, recently showcased their skills at the Good-Fight Sub-Only World Championship in Manheim, PA, a prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition.

At the world championship held last month, RJ secured silver in the no-gi category.  Connor earned bronze in both gi and no-gi divisions.

Coach Kieve Leeman’s Woodland Lady Dragons secured their fourth victory of the season on Wednesday, December 27, dominating George Stevens Academy with a commanding 25-15 performance in the second half, ultimately clinching a 50-37 win.

Woodland had three players reaching double figures.  Sophomore Kaylin Hamilton led the charge with 14 points, complemented by eight rebounds, five steals, and one block.

Kate McPhee Notches Double-Double in Victory

On Wednesday, January 3, Coach Brian Moreau’s Calais Blue Devils hosted the Royalettes of Jonesport-Beals and earned themselves their third win of the season, 49-34.

Junior Kate McPhee led the Blue Devils in scoring with 12 points.  She also had 13 rebounds.

Freshman Olivia Turner added nine points, and junior Kayleigh Scott added another eight.

The Lady Dragons basketball team of Woodland High School experienced a mixed week on the court, with a defeat and a victory highlighting their recent performances.

At Lincoln on Wednesday, January 3, facing the Mattanawcook Lynx, Woodland was handed their fourth loss of the season, succumbing to the height-advantaged Lynx team, 41-90.

Sophomore Karleigh Smith led the Dragons with 16 points, while senior Brooke Smith contributed 10.
