    Calais first responders were called on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 to the corner of Washington and Downes Street for a frightening incident involving a school bus and a child.

  3. Ranger News from East Range II School

     

    December was a whirlwind for students at ERII as they prepared for their performances and felt the building excitement and anticipation of Santa coming to visit. They very much enjoyed searching daily for Elf Charlotte and Elf Kenneth throughout the halls and classrooms of the school and seeing what mischief they were into.

    The Ranger basketball team played two hard-fought games against Medway and East Grand in December. They played very well and learned the ins-and-outs of the game while having fun.

  4. Woodland Defeats Shead in Girls’ Basketball Action

    At Shead High School on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, Coach Mark Hornbrook’s Dragons picked up their fourth win of the season.

    Leading the way for Woodland was freshman Karleigh Smith with 15 points in the 37-19 win.  Smith also grabbed four rebounds and had three steals.

    Senior Nicole Cox added seven points.  She also had five rebounds and three steals.

  5. Lady Blue Devils Pick up Two On-the-Road Wins

    At a game at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill on Tuesday, January 3, Coach Sean Cavanaugh’s Lady Blue Devils picked up another win this season, beating the Eagles 44-34.

    Senior Nevaeh Thomas led Calais with 17 points, shooting two for three from the three-point line and four for five from the field, according to the coach.

  10. National Heritage Area Approved for Washington/Hancock Counties

    After more than three years of meeting, planning and crafting a plan, late last month advocates of creating a monument to the historic industries and traditions of Maine’s two easternmost counties learned that their efforts had paid off. On December 23, the U.S. Congress approved a plan for a Downeast Maine National Heritage Area. If and when the NHA becomes a reality, it could qualify for $1M a year in federal funds.

    At Washington Academy on Friday, December 30, the Lady Blue Devils fell to the Raiders, 65-54.

    Calais was led by sophomore Kate McPhee with 14 and senior Nevaeh Thomas with 13 points in the overtime loss to WA. 

    According to Coach Sean Cavanaugh, “Calais struggled with foul trouble, having three out of the starting five fouling out in the fourth and overtime quarters.”

    On Tuesday, December 27, Calais Lady Blue Devil sophomore Kate McPhee had a game high 24 points, along with 15 rebounds, to lead her team to victory, 71-61, at a game hosted by the Woodland Dragons.  

    Senior Neveah Thomas contributed 20 points, with six shots made from behind the three-point line.  

    Also in the points column was sophomore Kayleigh Scott with 13 and senior Mercedes Owen with 11.  Junior Brenna Critchley added three.

    Down East Community Hospital welcomes its first baby of 2023!  Sontee Edwards and Matthew Minoty’s daughter, Jordyn Taylor Minoty, was born at Down East Community Hospital on January 2 at 2:36 a.m.  Jordyn weighed in at 8 pounds and 9 ounces and was 22” long.  

    DECH presented the family with a gift basket full of items for Jordyn.  The basket also contained several gift certificates for her parents.

    Calais City Council held its only meeting of the month on December 15, 2022.  

    A Special Amusement Permit for Crumbs Cafe & Coffee Bar was approved, with Councilor Kevin Niles abstaining from the vote.  Also approved was an application for a medical marijuana license for The Higher Class and an application for a medical marijuana license for Smoke on the Water.  There was no public comment on any of the three.

  21. Undefeated Defending State Champs too Strong for Lady Blue Devils

    The Calais girls’ basketball team hosted the defending Class D State Champion team Southern Aroostook last week, Thursday, December 22.

    The Warriors, coached by Cliff Urquart, have appeared in the last four state championship games, claiming the gold ball at three of them.

    Coach Sean Cavanaugh said, “Southern Aroostook showed they are still a force and gave Calais their second loss.”  The final score of the game was 73-23.

  22. Blue Devils Upset Dragons in High School Basketball Action

     

    Calais’ Jace Cook goes up for a shot while Woodland’s Cyrus Sewell defends.  The Calais Blue Devils upped their season record to 3-0 with a 97-70 win over the Woodland Dragons on Wednesday, December 21.  The next game for the Blue Devils is scheduled for Wednesday, December 28 when they host Schenck, followed by hosting Machias on Friday, December 30.  The Woodland Dragons, now 2-3, travel to Harrington on Thursday, December 29 to face the Narraguagus Knights.  (Photo by Jayna Smith)

    Woodland High School baseball coach Kenny Murphy passed away unexpectedly on December 12, 2022, and on Saturday, December 17, 2022, a Celebration of his Life was held at Calais High School.

    On one side of the gymnasium at the front was a sight that could not be missed:  a sea of black, purple, and gold caps and jerseys, all donned by members of Murphy’s baseball team.

    Four Criminal Justice students from Washington County Community College were chosen to attend the 28th Annual NEDIAI, or the New England Division of the International Association of Identification. 

    Taylor LeBlanc, Rose Adams, Mackenzie Hewitt, and Connor Cook were chosen by Criminal Justice and Conservation Law Instructor Wayde Carter and Jason Fowler of the Maine State Police and adjunct professor at WCCC.     The mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 3,400 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea, and abroad. The annual placement of wreaths took place on Saturday around the world, however, because of the weather on December 18, volunteers gathered at Acadia National Cemetery in Jonesboro for National Wreaths Across America Day. Currently, 48 soldiers and spouses are laid to rest at Acadia.

    Calais Fire-EMS, thanks to the Red Cross, has new smoke detectors available for locals.  Red Cross Disaster Program Manager David Brown made the delivery on Monday.

    According to Calais Fire Chief Bill Lee, Lt. Kevin Ingersoll reached out to the Red Cross regarding its Sound the Alarm program.  Through this program, the Red Cross provided the fire department with the new smoke detectors, available to anyone who needs one.

    My maternal Grandfather was born in 1898 in Brooklyn, New York and named Abraham Lincoln Plaut by his German –Jewish immigrant parents. His father was a kosher butcher and he became an entrepreneur, author, English teacher and baseball coach. He idolized Woodrow Wilson, but nobody is perfect. He taught me pinochle, bridge, baseball and how to read a financial statement. His best gift was Yiddish, which linked me to my ethnic immigrant past and gave me a rich lexicon of expressions still serving me all these years later.

    Each year, the Maine Children’s Alliance hosts the Champions for Children event to celebrate Mainers making a difference in the lives of Maine youth.     USW Local 27 members at Woodland Pulp in Baileyville have voted to reject the company’s recent contract offer and have authorized to strike.

    Voting among the union members took place on December 5 and 6, and according to USW Local 27 President Shawn Howland, 85 percent of the over 90 percent of members who voted showed approval of the strike.
