Blue Devils Upset Dragons in High School Basketball Action

 

Calais’ Jace Cook goes up for a shot while Woodland’s Cyrus Sewell defends.  The Calais Blue Devils upped their season record to 3-0 with a 97-70 win over the Woodland Dragons on Wednesday, December 21.  The next game for the Blue Devils is scheduled for Wednesday, December 28 when they host Schenck, followed by hosting Machias on Friday, December 30.  The Woodland Dragons, now 2-3, travel to Harrington on Thursday, December 29 to face the Narraguagus Knights.  (Photo by Jayna Smith)

Undefeated Defending State Champs too Strong for Lady Blue Devils

The Calais girls’ basketball team hosted the defending Class D State Champion team Southern Aroostook last week, Thursday, December 22.

The Warriors, coached by Cliff Urquart, have appeared in the last four state championship games, claiming the gold ball at three of them.

Coach Sean Cavanaugh said, “Southern Aroostook showed they are still a force and gave Calais their second loss.”  The final score of the game was 73-23.

McPhee and Thomas Propel Calais over Woodland in Girls’ Basketball Action

On Tuesday, December 27, Calais Lady Blue Devil sophomore Kate McPhee had a game high 24 points, along with 15 rebounds, to lead her team to victory, 71-61, at a game hosted by the Woodland Dragons.  

Senior Neveah Thomas contributed 20 points, with six shots made from behind the three-point line.  

Also in the points column was sophomore Kayleigh Scott with 13 and senior Mercedes Owen with 11.  Junior Brenna Critchley added three.

Lady Devils Can’t Hold on in Overtime at WA

At Washington Academy on Friday, December 30, the Lady Blue Devils fell to the Raiders, 65-54.

Calais was led by sophomore Kate McPhee with 14 and senior Nevaeh Thomas with 13 points in the overtime loss to WA. 

According to Coach Sean Cavanaugh, “Calais struggled with foul trouble, having three out of the starting five fouling out in the fourth and overtime quarters.”

At a game at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill on Tuesday, January 3, Coach Sean Cavanaugh’s Lady Blue Devils picked up another win this season, beating the Eagles 44-34.

Senior Nevaeh Thomas led Calais with 17 points, shooting two for three from the three-point line and four for five from the field, according to the coach.

Woodland Defeats Shead in Girls’ Basketball Action

At Shead High School on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, Coach Mark Hornbrook’s Dragons picked up their fourth win of the season.

Leading the way for Woodland was freshman Karleigh Smith with 15 points in the 37-19 win.  Smith also grabbed four rebounds and had three steals.

Senior Nicole Cox added seven points.  She also had five rebounds and three steals.

At a game at Jonesport-Beals High School last Tuesday, January 10, the Lady Dragons claimed their fifth win of the season, beating the Royalettes 49-42.

Karleigh Smith, a freshman, led all with 17 points.  Smith went 6-6 from the free-throw line, had eight steals, five rebounds, and four assists.

Coach Sean Cavanaugh’s Lady Blue Devils traveled to Narraguagus High School in Harrington last week, which ended in a close matchup against the Lady Knights, but the Calais team was victorious with a 46-43 win.

Pacing the way for Calais was senior Nevaeh Thomas, who had 18 points.  Thomas also had 10 steals, six rebounds, and three assists.
