  2. CHS Cross Country Continues to Make Strides

    On September 21, CHS cross country, with the help of athletic director Randy Morrison, Calais EMS, and Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge staged their home event.

    Shelby Cookson debuted in her first run for CHS and Bailey O'Rourke finished in fourth place out of 18 runners for the girls.   

    The boys took four of the top ten spots, with Tristan Seavey in third place, followed by Tyler Furtek, Keegan Trainor, and Logan Griffith.  

    The team wishes to thank all who made this a successful event.

    There are usually a couple of stories every week that raise my blood pressure and result in dark thoughts and angry mumbles. Here is a recent sampling:

    Angus King votes to confirm eco-terrorist and tree spiking apologist Tracy Stone-Manning as the director of the Bureau of Land Management, charged with the stewardship of millions of acres of public land. Ms. Manning was approved 50-45, with nary a Republican vote, including Senator Collins, who can usually be counted on to support the environmental left.

  8. Calais Junior High Volleyball Off to Strong Start

     

    The Calais Junior High School volleyball team has played three games so far this season and has come away with three victories.

    On September 21, Woodland Junior High’s volleyball team traveled to Calais, where they were handed a loss by the strong Calais team.

    Calais traveled to Machiasport on September 24 and faced the team from Jonesboro.  Calais was again victorious.

    Then, on September 30, Calais traveled to Lubec for another win.  

    The team is coached by Jessica Holmes.

  9. Harvest Festival Vendor Fair and Concert in the Park Draw Hundreds

    Hundreds flocked to triangle park throughout the day on Saturday to check out the many vendors onsite during CDRC’s Harvest Festival.
    Shoppers were not disappointed with the array of merchandise available.  Crafters and artisans showcased everything from hand-carved signs and other handcrafted decor to jewelry and clothing items, along with canned goods and preserves.

  11. Kids Enjoy Free Fun at CDRC’s Harvest Festival

    There was plenty of fun for kids of all ages at this year’s Harvest Festival.  Kicking off the morning was a one-mile fun run, hosted by Calais High School’s cross country team.  At the waterfront, kids had fun touring a US Coast Guard boat, learning about marine science with Downeast Institute’s portable touch tank, and painting rocks at Calais Free Library.

  13. Baileyville Faith Formation Students Help Feed the Hungry

     

    The St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish’s faith formation program at St. James the Greater Church in Baileyville discovered that the most effective way to educate children on the corporal works of mercy is to live them out.

    On September 26, students of the program delivered the proceeds of a canned goods and food item collection to the Woodland Community Food Pantry on 55 Broadway in Baileyville.

  16. Calais High School Golf Earns DAC Title

    At St. Croix Country Club last week, Calais High School golf earned the DAC Championship title for the second consecutive year.  The strong Calais team ended with a score of 403.  

    Machias High School reported a score of 480, followed by Narraguagus with 508.  
    Jace Cook shot an 88 for Calais, followed by Kobe Saunders with a 93, Zachary Wentworth 110, and Andrew Barnard 112.

  40. Annual POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony to be Held Sept. 17

     

    This Friday September 17th the Boyd Smith Mitchell VFW post 9779 will host the annual POW/MIA remembrance ceremony. It will be held at the Calais Fire station beginning at 11 a.m. standing in honor of those missing in action and prisoners of war.  At noon the ceremony will be held with roses being placed on the white table for all wars. Please join the VFW to stand guard and for the Ceremony.
