What's Up, Calais
Jayna Smith
It’s International Homecoming Festival week, with many fun events happening for people of all ages. I hear each year how there is nothing for the kids during the festival. That is not true at all! Pick up a schedule from a local business, find one online, or see it in last week’s edition of this publication. Nearly all the events are family-friendly or geared toward kids. The big event, of course, is the parade, which starts at noon on Saturday from Dead River, lower Barker Street.
Did you know there is free technical support offered bi-weekly at Calais Free Library? A representative from Sunrise County Economic Council, with support from the Maine Connectivity Authority, can assist with password recovery, email issues, setting up new devices, and other tech-related issues. No appointment is necessary; just walk in for a one-on-one session. This month’s sessions are being held from 2 to 4 on Tuesday, August 13, and Tuesday, August 27. For questions, one can call 207-255-0983.
Next Thursday, August 15, is the next Calais City Council meeting. These meetings are held in the council chambers at the city building and are open to the public. They are also live-streamed on Zoom and the city’s Facebook page.
There will be a great night of music and inspiration at Calais High School on Monday, August 19, when Seventh Day Slumber hits the stage. The group is a Christian rock band from Texas. The show will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Contact Pastor Johnny Chambers at 207-904-9005 to learn more.
You will not want to miss the American Idol star Julia Gagnon playing a one-hour show in Calais! This is slated for Thursday, August 22, at Flatiron Park. Local musician Alan Cook will have the stage starting at 5 p.m., and then Julia’s performance will start at 6:30 p.m. The concert is free, thanks to the efforts of CDRC - Calais Downtown Revitalization Coalition.
Send me your news, your shout-outs for good deeds done, or your well wishes to give, and I’ll be sure to share them here. Until next week, I hope you stay well, stay safe, and be happy.
