Calais Wrestling Has Strong Showing at Ryan Detour Tourney

The Calais High School varsity wrestling team recently traveled to Bucksport for the Ryan Detour Tournament, where they made a strong showing, finishing 6th out of 13 schools. The Blue Devils earned four first place, one second place, and three third place finishes. The first place winners were Ashaleigh Sulkowski, Destiny Holmes, Jack Lanier, and Chase Scott. Rose Lozada took second place, while Kayla Wilson, Cadien Seeley, and Bradley Walton earned third place finishes. These athletes fought hard and represented their team with determination and pride. Lady Dragons Fight Hard in Back-to-Back Games

At Woodland on Tuesday, December 17, the Lady Dragons secured a hard-fought victory over the Jonesport-Beals Royalettes, edging them out 55-50.

Mishun Cornelious delivered a standout performance, leading the Dragons with 23 points and an impressive 18 rebounds.

Karleigh Smith contributed 21 points, including three 3-pointers and making six steals.

Lara Salan Hurtado added 11 points, rounding out the Dragons’ scoring effort.

Lady Dragons Prepare for Busy Schedule Following Loss to Blue Devils

In a matchup between local rivals, the Calais Blue Devils were victorious with a 56-36 win over the Woodland Dragons on Saturday, December 21.

Dragon junior Karleigh Smith led all with  21 points at the game hosted by Woodland.

Other Dragons in the scoring column were sophomore Mishun Cornelius with 7 points, junior Lara Salan Hurtado with 3, freshman Addison Tripp and eighth grader Jordyn Phelps each with 2, and freshman Maddison Coleman with 1.

Three Downeast Board basketball officials with over 120 years combined experience worked their last game together on Dec. 19 at Gardner Gymnasium in East Machias when the host Lady Raiders of Washington Academy played the Old Town Coyotes. 

Wallace “Alvin” Hall of Gardner's Lake, Walt “Candy” Cummings of Deep Cover, and “The Doctor” Kevin Barbee of Milbridge, each have had over 40 years on the basketball court, and all three are tournament veterans as well.

Calais Outlasts Woodland in JH Basketball Showdown

At Woodland on Thursday, January 9, the junior high boys' basketball team hosted Calais in a competitive matchup. Calais emerged victorious with a final score of 48-38. 

Jacob Footer led the charge for Calais, scoring an impressive 15 points. 

Supporting Footer's efforts, Brock Collins and Rylan Harnoise each contributed 7 points, while Brayan Shirley added 6.
