At Calais on Saturday, Coach Tom Parks’ 8th-ranked girls faced the Riots of Orono in class C North soccer prelim action.  Despite a great effort by the Blue Devils, the 9th-ranked Riots secured the victory.

Korasadowicz Selected as Heisman School Scholarship Winner

 

The Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance announced the 2021 school winners for the Heisman High School Scholarship. Woodland Jr./Sr. High School is proud of Joanna Korasadowicz for being selected as a 2021 School Winner.  

Joanna's application is being reviewed by the committee for the opportunity to be the recipient of the $1,000 state scholarship.

Fourteen-year-old Kaden Ramos of Baileyville signed a one-year sponsorship with Head Penn Pickleball over the summer.  Upon signing this contact, he agreed to represent their company while playing in tournaments and other pickleball related activities. In return, they would provide him with equipment and gear.

Baring Man Takes Title of Deadlifting and Bench Pressing World Champion

A man from Baring is now the world champion of deadlifting and bench pressing.  Wayne Sowers participated in a four-day World Championship Competition from October 31 to November 3, among 300 other weightlifters.

Basketball Athletes, Spectators Look to Rebound Against COVID

Basketball has begun at area high schools, and while athletes are excited to get back on the court, spectators are excited to get back into the gym after COVID-19 excluded them from all games last year.

According to Calais High School athletic director Randy Morrison, the Maine Principals’ Association Sports Medicine Committee (MPA SMA) has many recommendations in place; however, each school is responsible for setting their own rules surrounding COVID-19.

Calais Student Named Heisman State Scholarship Winner

Kobe Saunders, a senior at Calais High School, has been named an overall state winner of the Heisman High School Scholarship by Acceptance Insurance.

The opportunity to apply was open to all seniors who have a GPA of 3.0 or better, are proven leaders and role models in their school and community, and have participated in at least one recognized sport while in high school.

Alexis Donahue and Saunders were named the female and male winners at the school level for Calais High School.

Players and fans throughout Washington County have welcomed back basketball after last year brought an abbreviated season with no tournaments and no spectators, all due to the coronavirus pandemic.  This season is looking closer to normal, with full schedules, tournaments planned, and spectators–although masked–permitted in most schools.
