1. The Calais Advertiser’s Publisher Acquires Alabama’s Oldest Family Newspaper

     

    Pierre Little, publisher of the Machias Valley News Observer and The Calais Advertiser this week announced he has purchased a newspaper located in Ozark, Alabama, The Southern Star, the state’s oldest family newspaper.

    The Southern Star has been in the Adams family for 154 years, initially begun by Joe Adams’s great grandfather in 1867, when the county seat was located in the town of Newton. When the county seat moved 10 miles away to Ozark, The Southern Star moved, too.

    It is that time of year again, when Pratt auto dealership matches food pantry donations, making November a great month to make a contribution to your local food pantry.

    Recognizing how great the need is for the pantries in Washington County and in an effort to decrease food insecurity locally, businessman Ian Pratt is again doing a donation-match campaign for the entire month, dollar for dollar up to $5,000, to be split among Washington County food pantries.

    The Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance announced the 2021 school winners for the Heisman High School Scholarship. Woodland Jr./Sr. High School is proud of Joanna Korasadowicz for being selected as a 2021 School Winner.

    On Monday, November 1, patrons at Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry in Calais had the opportunity to receive fresh-pressed apple cider, thanks to Healthy Acadia.

    Rae Rowell, AmeriCorps volunteer with Healthy Acadia, was onsite pressing locally-grown apples into fresh, tangy-sweet cider.  “The initiative I am working on is Ending Hunger in Maine by 2030, and so my job is to help Healthy Acadia meet some of the goals that are in that initiative.”

    Calais Fire-EMS responded to a structure fire at 98 Lafayette Street on Saturday afternoon.
    According to Fire Chief Ken Clark, the homeowner called the fire department directly to report the fire.  “We would like to remind people to please call 911 in the event of an emergency,” Clark mentioned.

    Kelly Bartlett grew up believing her grandparents Herbert and Olive (McLean) Bacon of the Calais area had been shot and killed on October 31, 1947.  The alleged incident occurred in Kellyland, near Baileyville.  Bartlett’s mother Jean, daughter of Herbert and Olive, was only six years old at the time of their unfortunate deaths.

    CDRC (Calais Downtown Revitalization Coalition) works hard to promote downtown, bringing beautification projects, such as the gardens and hanging flowers, as well as bringing the community together, such as through the summer concert series and other events.  One recent event made possible by CDRC was the annual Harvest Festival.

    Many might find a former auto parts store and garage an unlikely place for a church to be located, but Pastor Justin Harvey said that this location is actually perfect for them. He said that while not opposed to a more traditional style building, they didn’t need a steeple for their ministry.  Since its founding in the Calais area, the Calvary Chapel has had a number of locations, the most recent of which, was the building on the corner of Union Street and North Street that they shared with Ace Hardware.

    The Woodland girls’ soccer team posted a 3-3 record over the last two weeks, according to Coach Kris Siering.  This brings the team’s record to 6-4-1 on the season.  

    Losses for the Dragons over those two weeks came from Penobscot Valley, Shead, and Bangor Christian High Schools.  Two wins were earned by the Dragons over Narraguagus and another over Lee Academy.

  28. Calais City Council Swears in New Councilor

    Former Councilor Bill Cody announced at the end of the summer that he would be leaving the city council as he was relocating from Calais. Prior to his leaving, the council met with the prospective candidates to fill his seat, and after the executive session meeting, the council named William Quinn as Cody’s successor. Quinn ran for one of the two vacant seats at last year’s election, losing in votes to Cody and Mark Carr.

  30. 77-year-old Man from Eastport Wins Boston Marathon in His Age Division

    An Eastport man has won the 75 to 79 year age group in the 125th running of the Boston Marathon.
    On October 11th, Philip Krajewski completed the 26.2 mile course in 3 hours, 45 minutes, and 26 seconds - an 8.36 pace. This gave him the second fastest time of any runner, 77 or older, in the past 20 years.

  36. CHS Cross Country Continues to Make Strides

    On September 21, CHS cross country, with the help of athletic director Randy Morrison, Calais EMS, and Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge staged their home event.

    Shelby Cookson debuted in her first run for CHS and Bailey O'Rourke finished in fourth place out of 18 runners for the girls.   

    The boys took four of the top ten spots, with Tristan Seavey in third place, followed by Tyler Furtek, Keegan Trainor, and Logan Griffith.  

    The team wishes to thank all who made this a successful event.

Ms. Manning was approved 50-45, with nary a Republican vote, including Senator Collins, who can usually be counted on to support the environmental left.

  42. Calais Junior High Volleyball Off to Strong Start

     

    The Calais Junior High School volleyball team has played three games so far this season and has come away with three victories.

    On September 21, Woodland Junior High’s volleyball team traveled to Calais, where they were handed a loss by the strong Calais team.

    Calais traveled to Machiasport on September 24 and faced the team from Jonesboro.  Calais was again victorious.

    Then, on September 30, Calais traveled to Lubec for another win.  

    The team is coached by Jessica Holmes.

    Hundreds flocked to triangle park throughout the day on Saturday to check out the many vendors onsite during CDRC’s Harvest Festival.
    Shoppers were not disappointed with the array of merchandise available.  Crafters and artisans showcased everything from hand-carved signs and other handcrafted decor to jewelry and clothing items, along with canned goods and preserves.

    There was plenty of fun for kids of all ages at this year’s Harvest Festival.  Kicking off the morning was a one-mile fun run, hosted by Calais High School’s cross country team.  At the waterfront, kids had fun touring a US Coast Guard boat, learning about marine science with Downeast Institute’s portable touch tank, and painting rocks at Calais Free Library.
