Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony

 

On Wednesday September 18th, Veterans of Foreign War Post 9779 held its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony to honor the symbol of our American freedom, the American Flag, as they were retired from duty.  These flags are no longer serviceable but they have served us as a reminder of our nation and those who have defended our freedom.  

Commander Sivret explained that The United States Flag Code states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

School Reviews BARR Program Results

Three years ago Calais High School began participation in the BARR program, Building Assets, Reducing Risks, which is designed to create ways for teachers to better connect to their students. The program at Calais focuses on the 9th-grade students and creating a way for the students to get acclimated to the high school setting as well as finding a support system for the coming years.

The City of Calais announced via Facebook on Friday, September 13 that it hired Haley Coutinho as the City Building’s new Office Assistant. Coutinho had previously filled this role on a part-time basis. In this role, she will be the city’s Deputy Clerk and Tax Collector.

Holmestead’s Entryway Back to Original 1850 Condition

Many today have probably never heard of Asher Bassford, a noted 1800s Calais-area architect.  Bassford designed and built many homes and other structures in the area, among them the old Calais Academy and some now long gone Main Street homes.  One of these structures still stands, however, and that is the Holmestead at 527 Main Street, built in 1850.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day

 

September 20, 2019 proclaimed, by the President, as National POW/MIA Recognition Day. 

The Calais area Prisoners of War and Missing in Action (POW/MIA) Remembrance Ceremony was held Friday at the Calais Fire Station.  Prior to the ceremony, retired members of the military took turns standing Guard at the flag to remember all our POW/MIAs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It’s no secret that physical activity and exercise are good for you, with numerous studies proving the associated health benefits.  As we age, it becomes even more important.  This is why Sally Doten began offering free sittercise classes about one year ago to women over 60.  

“I went over [to Calais Regional Hospital] and talked to Kris Mesman at physical therapy and asked what we could do.  She thought it would be good to just move,” Doten explained, adding, “After 60, you need to move.”
