Thrift Shop Seeks Volunteers

Many may not realize it, but one of the busiest shops in downtown is the Calais Community Thrift Shop.  It’s so busy, in fact, that more volunteers are being sought to allow for an expansion of its current part-time hours of operation.  

Right now, according to volunteer Linda Howe, the shop’s hours are limited to 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday--“when we have staff,” she said.  Because the shop is run strictly by volunteers, the days and hours sometimes vary.

Indian Township School to Start Year with New School Bus

On Thursday, August 15, 2019, the Indian Township School took delivery of a new school bus just in time for the first day of school.

The bus, a 2020 Thomas 77-passenger school bus, arrived around 1 p.m. on Thursday from W.C. Cressey & Son in Kennebunk, Maine. The bus features a state-of-the-art camera system, an electronically controlled diesel engine, and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) which is injected into the exhaust to reduce the emission of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOX).

Head Harbor Passage Boating Trip

On August 24th, Maine Audubon will be hosting their 3rd Annual Head Harbor Passage boat trip. The trip will begin in Eastport and follow into the waters of Head Harbor Passage where participants will be able to explore and look for wildlife.

Maine Audubon is a group that works to conserve the wildlife and wildlife habitats of Maine. They try to achieve this by teaching and educating others about conservation and taking action.

Make-A-Wish Foundation Comes to Calais

18-year-old Alex Newsome was granted his wish on Tuesday, August 20th. The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted Alex’s wish of having his very own hot tub. 

While he was working as a camp counselor at the Calais public pool, a limousine pulled up filled with his family to surprise him, along with his friends and campers holding signs that said “Yay Alex” and “We love you”. He was handed a ‘Make-A-Wish’ T-shirt and a pin that said “Wish Kid” and they took him to see his wish come true.
