After a long winter’s nap, black bears in Maine are stirring from their dens, driven by the need to replenish their lost body weight.  According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW), Maine boasts the largest population of black bears in the contiguous United States, and their activity peaks between April 1 and November 1.

Saint Croix Island Visitor Center Opens for the Season

 

Saint Croix Island International Historic Site opens its Visitor Center at 8 a.m., Saturday, May 25.  Admission to park grounds is free of charge and park rangers will offer a variety of public programs throughout the season, which runs to October 31. The grounds are already open.

In addition to guided tours, kids of all ages can take part in our Junior Ranger program.  Each can stamp their Passport to the Parks book, take part in a monthly interactive program, or picnic at one of the benches.
