Popular Plant Sale Returns to Again Benefit CDRC

Before the closing of the congregational church, the women’s club there held an annual plant and pie sale.  That sale was always successful, with many coming for a healthy, happy plant and a sweet treat, all for a great cause.

Now, like last year, Calais Downtown Revitalization Coalition (CDRC), with lots of help from everyone’s favorite local gardener Jane Eaton, will host a plant sale on Saturday, June 4.

Bargain Hunter’s Paradise at Upcoming Lioness Yard Sale

The Calais Lioness Club is ready for its annual spring yard sale, taking place this Saturday, May 21.

The sale is always a popular one, with many finds for the bargain hunter.  

Everything from housewares and books to clothing and sporting goods–and of course more–will be available, all by a donation to the club.

Infant Formula Shortage Experienced Locally

Over 40 percent of infant formula brands were sold out during the first week of May, according to a report by Datasembly.  That is up from 31 percent just three weeks prior.

Across the nation, and including in Maine, many major retailers have placed limits on the amount of formula shoppers can purchase.  
The shortage of baby formula can be attributed to the COVID-era supply chain issues, coupled with a top manufacturer’s recall in February.

Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry Receives Grant

 

The Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry is honored to announce that it has received a $9,000 grant from the Washington County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. The grant is made for general support. The Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry, formed in 1993, provides assistance to approximately 800 families in Washington County.

24th Annual Children’s Fishing Derby Coming Up

The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Cobscook Bay State Park, and the Friends of the Moosehorn NWR invite children 16 and under, along with their families, to go fishing at Cobscook Bay State Park Headquarters Pond in Edmunds on Saturday, June 18.  The event marks the 24th annual fishing derby.

“The State of Maine will stock brook trout into the pond just before the derby,” said Supervisory Wildlife Biologist Ray Brown.

Calais Memorial Day Events Announced

For the second consecutive year, there will be no Memorial Day parade in Calais, according to  American Legion Sherman Brothers Post No. 3 Commander Mike McLean.  Other traditional events to recognize and mourn the U.S. military personnel who have perished while serving in the armed forces are still slated for the federal holiday.

Washington County Community College Holds First in Person Graduation Ceremony in Two Years 

For the first time in two years, Washington County Community College graduates were presented their diplomas in person.

The 2022 commencement ceremony took place on Friday, May 20th at 11a.m. outside overlooking the beautiful St. Croix River on the campus lawn.
After the graduates marched into the sound of ceremonial bagpipes performed by Ernie Smith, the Passamaquoddy Drummers performed, and the National Anthems were sung by Anne Scott.

President Susan Mingo then took the stage to begin the ceremony.
